2007 was an active year for Wild Rose Congregational Church, United Church of Christ. In January, we installed the church officers. We listened to the wisdom of Dr. Martin Luther King in a service dedicated to his work. We began a new Women’s Spirituality Group that focused on the book The Friendships of Women. The group was hosted by Charlotte.
February found us celebrating the Mardi Gras at Karen’s house, an annual party.
March took our Confirmation kids to the movie Amazing Grace and more good discussion about the role of social justice in the United Church of Christ.
In April, a number of Wild Roses attended the “Step It Up” rally at First Plymouth, organized to raise awareness about carbon emissions and our collective desire to lower them. We had a busy booth the following weekend at the Evergreen Lake House Earth Day celebration. Michelle wrote a puppet play, and many of us enacted it. Sandy created the stage and Bruce oversaw our participation with this regional observance. We handed out brochures and made our presence known. We were honored by Eco Justice Ministries at a luncheon at the Butterfly Pavillion, being named the exemplary congregation for the year 2007. Earth Day worship was celebrated with musician John Erlandson. We had an Adult Forum on Hinduism with Sarasvati Buhrman.
May held our annual e.waste recycling drive, this year in cooperation with the Rotary club and the fire station. All of this was orchestrated by Bruce. We had a lovely Mother’s Day breakfast served by the men. We began a study of the book The Tent of Abraham. Ellen Rosenthal came up from Denver to get us started.
In June, the Youngs and I represented us at the Rocky Mountain Conference annual meeting in Colorado Springs. We enjoyed outdoor worship at the Bolson’s on Father’s Day with music by Haney’s Homemade Jam.
We had fun and raised money for the music program with our first Ice Cream Social in July. The kids made some wonderful ice cream! Haneys hosted their annual bluegrass potluck.
August found us gathering up our seldom-used belongings for the very successful rummage sale organized by Sandy.
We were fortunate to host Lucas Shamala in the pulpit in September.
In October we enjoyed a Pet Blessing and consideration of the work of St. Francis. The Stewardship Campaign began under the capable direction of Bruce. Our recent potluck was a big success, with dishes being done by Sharon. We hosted Taize worship three times in the fall of this year, enjoying programs put together by Elsa.
We discovered that our grant proposal for Ann’s sabbatical was not funded. We knew we had a one in nine chance. We were encouraged by the Lilly Foundation to try again for 2009, and we will do so. The process helped us see how much we are invested in developing our music program.
In 2007, we gained three members: Bud and Juanita Weare, and Linda Yates. Two households became inactive: Markie Studwell and the Emanuels. We had one loss through death: Harriet Dresser. We currently have two households that have expressed interest in joining.
