Preserving the tradition of hospitality in Evergreen, CO, through affordable housing opportunities.
Providing Affordable Workforce Housing: The Interfaith Group has recently adopted a specific project to serve our community. It has come to our attention that much of the workforce in Evergreen cannot afford to live here. To help mitigate that problem, we have begun to search for suitable properties for affordable workforce housing and for the funding by which to procure them.
A home is considered affordable if it costs no more than 30% of the renter’s income. However, according the Joint Center for Housing Studies, Colorado is one of 13 states where over half of the low-income households pay more than 50% of their income in rent. When housing costs consume a disproportionate share of income, people cannot afford other necessities such as food, healthcare and transportation. They are unable to create financial safety nets for their families. Families with children are hit the hardest because they generally have more non-housing costs to consider.
Our Timeline: AT HOME in Evergreen, Inc. was formed in late 2007. Our first year of existence taught us a great deal. We still have much to learn about property restrictions in Jefferson County. We have much to learn about grant money and how to procure it. We are pleased to state that we were successful in acquiring tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service. We are a 501c3 tax-exempt public charity.
Community Commitment to Our Cause: The members of the Interfaith Group are amazed at the energy this proposal is generating in our community. Many people support the notion of social justice in providing affordable workforce housing. Others are interested in finding out more about the founding spirit of hospitality in Evergreen and the idea of historical preservation. Some wish to participate as a form of personal legacy gifting to our town. One group sees it as a chance for spiritual growth and “pushing through” our fears and doubts to allow this project to happen. Others see a bigger picture of religious, secular and commercial interests joining forces for the greater good of our community. Won’t you join us?
